An effective practice is an activity that is currently being implemented by a Teamster Local Union or Joint Council. The recognized effective practices have been identified through a nomination and selection process based on the criteria established for the Skills for Tomorrow project.
Award Winning Programs
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters recognizes the following local unions for their programs that expose students to a variety of career options, including high wage union jobs in growth industries.

Local 20 in
Toledo, OH: Labor Education Program has taken the
union message to over 25 high schools in the Toledo,
Ohio for the past three years.

Local 25 in Boston, MA: Labor in the Classrooms engaged in classroom presentations, job shadowing, and a summer jobs program.

Local 63 in Covina, CA: Educational and Career Development involved in educational assistance and preparation, career planning, and a union summer program.

Local 96 in Washington, D.C.
held job-shadowing event for nine high school students in the District of Columbia.

Local 115 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania held a career day event for over 900 high school students in the Philadelphia area.

122 in Boston, MA: Educating College Students About
Unions has been reaching out to graduate students at
Harvard Business School through the Harvard Trade Union
Program.
- Local 147 in Des Moines, Iowa taught 300 school children about labor, union careers and workplace rights.

Local 170 in Worcester, MA: School-to-Work Initiative engaged in job shadowing, career day, field trips to union sites, and a summer jobs program.
- Local 414 in Fort Wayne, Indiana sent union leaders to talk to middle and high school students about union labor and driving occupations.
- Local 421 in Dubuque, Iowa arranged for 120 high school juniors and seniors to participate in a citywide bargaining simulation.

Local 502 in Philadelphia, Pennyslvania delivers message of collective bargaining through book donation to promote reading among 6,000 elementary school children. Also engaged in career day involving over 900 high school students.

Local 537 in Denver, Colorado
reached out to about 150 high school students to teach
them about unionism and the benefits of being a
Teamster.

Local 541 in Kansas City, Missouri held a career fair, shadowing and internship program, for students in the Kansas City and Independence areas.
- Local 601 in Stockton, California reached out to high school students to teach them about the Teamsters Union and union careers.

Local 631 in Las Vegas, Nevada reaches out to young people in the Southern Nevada area to get them into apprenticeship and training programs in the construction/convention career fields.

Local 688 in St. Louis, MO: Helping College Students from Diverse Background Put a Human Face on Business engaged college students in a simulated collective bargaining activity.
- Local 693 in Binghamton, New York sponsored an internship during the summer to teach a college student about organizing and labor. Local leaders also guest-lectured at an area college in a debate format with a management counterpart to teach young people about unions.

Local 696 in Topeka, KS: Community Relations with the Teamsters involved in career days, youth summer employment, and a scholarship program.
- Local 730 in Washington, D.C. sponsored a family day, career day and adopt-a-school program activities at an elementary school.

Local 769 in Miami, Florida gives classroom presentations to hundreds of high and junior high school students in South Florida on the benefits of being a Teamster.
- Local 830 in Philadelphia, PA: Building Educator Awareness and Understanding of Unions Through Internship Experiences promoted an internship program for teachers to learn about unions and how schools can partner with unions in promoting the career development of high school students.

- Local 926 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania sponsored a guest-lecturing program, where Carnegie Mellon MBA students learn about the Teamsters Union, the real world of work and the role labor plays on the job, in the community and on the national scene.

1150 in Stratford, CT: School-to-Career Union Mentoring
Program formed a partnership with Sikorsky and the
local vocational high school system to adopt this
program.
- Joint Council 32 in Saint Paul-Minneapolis, MN: Skills for Tomorrow High School provides on-going support for the Skills for Tomorrow High School through internships, work experience, and other career development activities.
- Joint Council 42 in El Monte, CA: Collective Bargaining in the Classroom involved in a collective bargaining in the classroom with area high schools.

Joint Council 53 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania sent union leaders to talk to over 900 high school students about Teamster jobs that pay a living wage.
