Building Educator Awareness and Understanding of Unions Through Internship Experiences

Teamsters Local Union 830
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Summary

Teamsters Local Union #830 has established a unique and innovative approach to ensuring that teachers fully understand the role of unions in today’s labor market. This past year an internship for teachers of the Philadelphia Public Schools has been established and provides hands-on opportunities for these teachers to work with union officials and representatives to learn about the benefits of unions. The internship also provides opportunities for teachers to explore industry trends, visit selected industries, and learn specifically how schools can partner with unions in promoting the career development of high school students. Local Union #830 also makes available curriculum resources and a wide range of informational materials that teachers can use directly in their classrooms to promote students’ understanding of the role of unions and the benefits of becoming a Teamster Union member.
