Skills For Tomorrow Project Presents…

Online Resource Guide: Take a Stand Against Violence & Terrorism

Across the United States, parents and educators have been talking with their children and students about the recent attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and a flight originating from Newark, New Jersey. Many of our school age children are confused and afraid.

How can you talk with your children about terrorism or tragedies? Here are some resources you can explore for ideas on how to discuss the recent acts of terrorism with your children. We also include scholarly writings for college level students. As a parent, these resources may be helpful to you. Or, perhaps an educator in your community would benefit from this list?

For further information, contact the Skills For Tomorrow Project c/o Education Department, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, 25 Louisiana Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20001. Telephone: (202) 624-8117.

General Resources, Helping Children Cope

Media

How can parents respond to the impact of the media on children during the broadcast of these and other tragedies? Here are some ideas.

What is resilience?

Resilience is defined as the "human capacity and ability to face, overcome, be strengthened by, and even be transformed by experiences of adversity." How can parents and teachers help children understand that by being resilient we can overcome tragic events and promote healing, learning and growth?

Children's books

This section contains a list of children's literature that may be helpful for parents and teachers to guide children through difficult discussions. Please contact your local children's librarian about other helpful, age-appropriate resources.

Many unions are engaged in search and rescue efforts, or providing on-going disaster relief. Some unions are providing recommendations on ways the aviation can be made safer. The official Teamsters Website and the Teamsters Airline Division includes information on how one union responded to the attacks, and offers proposals for ways the government, airline industry and unions can work together to make the skies safer for passengers, crew and other workers alike. There are many other websites that provide general information on helping young people understand terrorism or cope with their feelings on the same.
