Teamsters Local 429 Meets the Girl Scouts

On Tuesday February 6th, 2002 the Education Department collaborated with D.C. Meyers, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local Union 429 on a program to introduce Girl Scouts in Reading, Pennsylvania to the Teamsters Union.

Girl Scout Brownies and Juniors ranging from ages 7-12, were introduced to the labor movement through job association and concepts connecting strength with unity, purpose and numbers.

The program featured interactive exercises, a photo library exhibit of Teamsters at work and a videotape on "Teamsters in America" that proved instructional and inspirational.

"There’s a great deal of interest in the outreach program we have in Washington, D.C. with the Girl Scouts," says Education Department representative Sharlene Mentor. "Local 429 hopes to make this scouting outreach effort an annual event."

The Skills for Tomorrow Project is a collaboration of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, employers, educators and other workforce development partners to recognize, celebrate, promote and assist Local Unions and Joint Councils in their efforts in creating school-to-work learning opportunities for America’s youth.
