Union Job Fair Benefits Students at D.C. Public Schools

Story and photograph provided by International Brotherhood of Teamsters Communications Department.

On Friday, October 20th, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Education Department participated in the AFL-CIO's Washington Metropolitan Council's first annual Union Job Fair. More than 600 students from D.C. Public Schools flooded the exhibit hall at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Capitol Hill to learn more about union jobs and careers in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams addressed the young men and women from area schools who met some of the region's top employers and the union members who make these companies successful.

Many of D.C.'s public school students learned about unions like the Teamsters for the very first time. The IBT Education Department plans to double its efforts next year as well as share exhibit items on Teamster industries with local affiliates.

Special thanks goes out to Locals 639, 96, 246, 922, as well as the Teamsters Airline, Government Affairs, Warehouse, Port, Human Rights and Strategic Affairs Departments who donated staff time or union items for this first-of-its-kind event.
