Celebrating Black History MonthAs you know, February is Black History month. Black history is not only the struggle of an oppressed people in our nation, but a struggle that was part of a larger social and economic movement to improve the lives of the working class. The American Labor Studies Center web site (www.labor-studies.org) is focusing on the Black experience in the American labor movement throughout our history during February. The site contains a wide variety of rich and interesting resources for teachers including the "I Am A Man" exhibit developed by the Reuther Library honoring the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Workers' Strike, "African Americans And The Labor Movement" by James Gilbert Cassidy from the National Archives, books such as "Black Freedom Fighters in Steel: The Struggle for Democratic Unionism" by Ruth Needleman, links to Cornell University's African American Workers Library Resource Site, and references to films and videos such as "A. Philip RandolphFor Jobs and Freedom." Also new is "A Brief Tutorial on Using This Site" for teachers developed for the ALSC by Peter Laird, a student at Cornell's School of Industrial and Labor Relations while interning at the New York State AFL-CIO. Please take time to visit the site to view these new features as well as the other valuable resources that can help students learn about the important contributions workers and unions have made to our nation |
