Oregon Students Visit the International

On February 13, Teamsters Headquarters hosted a dozen junior and senior high school students from the Catlin Gabel School in Portland, Oregon.

After receiving a warm welcome from Associate Director of Education Michael Filler, students learned about the Teamsters Union and its history, what it is like to be an organizer and the outstanding legislative issues facing the union. Other presenters included Karin Jones, Communications Department; Aaron Sawyer, Local 922; Roger Newell, Corporate and Strategic Affairs Department; and Chuck Harple, Government Affairs Department.

"We were extremely impressed with the hospitality and general preparation for the trip," said Peter Shulman, a teacher at the Gabel School. "We were given the royal treatment, and this was really appreciated by the students. The speakers and film were quite good."

"During our visit to the Teamsters, I was able to learn a little more about the organization my father belonged to many years ago," said student Matt Lundeberg. "I was also able to see the importance of a strong union for workers today—to gain the best for them and their families."

"Our trip to Teamsters Headquarters was one of the highlights of our trip," said student Alec MacColl. "All of your enthusiastic speakers impressed me and my peers with their pragmatism concerning current events and how they related to the Teamsters Union and its members."

The Teamsters Union reaches out to youth all across the United States and Canada to teach them about labor, workers' rights and the world of work.
