Local 1150 Flies High Again

On June 28, Local 1150 in Stratford, Connecticut kicked off its annual eight-week Union Mentoring Program in partnership with its employer, Sikorsky Aircraft, and the local high school system. Sikorsky is vying for an all-important contract to continue manufacturing the fleet of helicopters used by the President and Vice-President of the United States by asserting its “Made In America” reputation for high quality.

This year, the number of interns doubled to 24 from last year. The interns were selected from four local high schools: Bull-Haven Vocational-Technical in Bridgeport, Platt Technical in Milford, Emmett O’Brien in Ansonia, and Kaynor Technical in Waterbury.

Before the interns began work with their mentors, they received briefings about their work areas, attended an orientation session, and received specific environmental, health and safety training.

Local 1150 has conducted its mentoring program for the past three years. Last year, the local received an award from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters for its exemplary mentoring program that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of young people in the Stratford area.
