TransTech Academy Celebrates Another Year of Achievements

On June 3, TransTech Academy at the Francis L. Cardozo Senior High School held its Senior Awards and Recognition Program in Washington, D.C. Teamster representatives James McCall of the Legal Department and James Beeharilal of the Education Department  also attended the celebration.

The academy's graduating class of 2004 consisted of 31 students—15 of whom graduated with honors. Several of the young men and women received scholarships from various sources and were accepted by more than one institution of higher learning. Most of the graduates are from lower income families and received support to pursue their career goals.

“Transportation is a growing field that is critical to the nation’s economy. The Teamsters Union is proud to have the opportunity to work with these young people as they move into leading Teamster industries, including surface and air transport,” said Teamsters Education Director Mary G. Hardiman. “The Hoffa Administration has made important strides to reach out to young people.  In addition to winning a more than $500,000 school-to-work grant, the General President has increased the union’s scholarship awards tenfold and donated thousands of Teamster history books to schools and libraries across the United States and Canada.”

The awards were presented by TransTech Academy Coordinator Shirley C. McCall. The Teamsters received an award of appreciation which was accepted by Beeharilal on behalf of the union. “In recognition of your commitment and dedication to the TransTech Academy of Cardozo Senior High School, the students, parents and teachers appreciate your unwavering support throughout the years,” McCall said.

The TransTech Academy is a valuable partner of the Teamsters Skills For Tomorrow project. Throughout the years, a large number of the 2004 graduates actively participated in Teamster programs.
